27614 RARE AND FINE REMINGTON NO. 1 HEAVY SPORTING BUFFALO RIFLE, CIRCA 1872-75. ($5900)

RARE AND FINE REMINGTON NO. 1 HEAVY SPORTING BUFFALO RIFLE, CIRCA 1872-75. .40-70 caliber with 34" heavyweight octagonal barrel signed "E. Remington & Sons, Ilion N.Y." in italic letters. Caliber marking on bottom flat forward of forend. Weighs 13 pounds. Original Remington long range tang sight. Most of the original barrel blue with some plum patination. Rolling Block frame with lots of early casehardening turning dark. Excellent walnut stock and forend with very nicely figured wood and with original casehardened buttplate and forend cap. Absolutley mint bore. Serial numbered in the 8XXX range and all original and matching. For reference on this rare "Buffalo Rifle" model see Madaus and Goodwin, "The Guns of Remington", p. 150.
